Image Converter — PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF

Convert between PNG, JPG, WebP, and AVIF in your browser. Drag and drop multiple files, set quality for lossy formats, download as a ZIP. No upload, no signup, no watermark.

Quick answer

An image converter changes a photo from one file format to another — PNG to JPG, JPG to WebP, anything to AVIF. WRRK's converter supports four formats (PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF), batch processing with ZIP download, a quality slider for lossy formats, and runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. AVIF gracefully falls back with a clear message on browsers that can't encode it.

About this tool

WRRK's image converter changes file formats between PNG, JPG, WebP, and AVIF using the browser's built-in Canvas API. Each image is decoded, drawn to a canvas at full resolution, then re-encoded to the target format with optional quality control. The conversion happens locally — files never leave your device, so the tool is private and works offline once the page is open.

Pick a format based on use case. WebP is the modern web default — supported in every browser since 2020 and 25-35% smaller than JPG at equivalent quality. JPG is universally supported and still the right choice for email attachments and uploads to legacy systems. PNG is lossless with transparency support — perfect for logos, screenshots, and graphics with sharp text. AVIF is the newest and smallest, often 50% smaller than JPG, but encoding requires a modern browser.

How to convert images (5 steps)

  1. Drop your images. Drag PNG, JPG, WebP, or AVIF files into the drop zone, or click to browse. Any number of files is fine — they're processed in parallel.
  2. Pick the output format. Choose WebP for the best balance of size and compatibility, JPG for legacy systems, PNG for screenshots and transparency, or AVIF for the smallest possible file.
  3. Set quality. For lossy formats (JPG, WebP, AVIF), drag the slider — 80-85% is visually identical to 100% for most photos and 30-50% smaller. PNG is lossless and skips this step.
  4. Convert. Click 'Convert'. Each image is decoded with the browser's image decoder, drawn onto a Canvas, and re-encoded in your chosen format. Nothing is uploaded.
  5. Download. Download files individually, or click 'Download ZIP' to grab all converted files in one archive named like 'converted-webp.zip'.

When to convert

  • Replacing PNGs with WebP to cut website page weight by 30-40%
  • Converting iPhone HEIC exports back to JPG for older software
  • Saving design exports as WebP for social posts
  • Producing AVIF assets for CDN delivery on modern browsers
  • Flattening transparent PNGs to JPG for email attachments
  • Converting JPG screenshots to PNG for crisper text
  • Bulk-migrating an asset folder from one format to another

Frequently asked questions

+−Which format should I convert my images to?

WebP is the best balance for the modern web — about 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, supported in every modern browser. JPG is still the safest choice for email attachments and legacy systems. PNG is best for screenshots, logos, and anything needing transparency. AVIF is the smallest of all but only works in newer browsers.

+−What is AVIF and why might it not work?

AVIF is a newer image format that produces files about 50% smaller than JPG at the same quality. It works in Chrome 85+, Edge 121+, Firefox 113+, and Safari 16.4+. Encoding AVIF requires browser support — older browsers will see a clear error message instead of a silently broken file.

+−Are my images uploaded to your server?

No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your photos never leave your device — the tool even works offline once the page loads.

+−Can I convert multiple images and download as a ZIP?

Yes. Drop as many files as you want, click 'Convert', then 'Download ZIP'. The ZIP contains every converted file, named like the original but with the new extension.

+−Why did my PNG with a transparent background turn white when converted to JPG?

JPG doesn't support transparency. When you convert a PNG with an alpha channel to JPG, the transparent pixels are filled with white. Use WebP or AVIF instead if you need to keep transparency in a smaller file.

+−What does the quality slider do?

For lossy formats (JPG, WebP, AVIF), the quality slider controls the compression level. 80-85% is the sweet spot — visually lossless for most photos at half the file size of 100%. PNG is lossless and ignores the quality setting.

+−How big a batch can I convert at once?

There's no fixed limit — the tool processes files in parallel. Browser memory limits matter for very large batches (200+ high-resolution photos), so split into smaller batches if your tab gets sluggish.
