About this tool
A tip (or gratuity) is a discretionary payment to service staff over and above the bill. The percentage that's considered "polite" varies wildly by country: standard in the US, modest in the UK, almost zero in Japan. WRRK's tip calculator runs the math in your browser, lets you slide the tip percentage between 10% and 30%, splits between any number of people, and supports six currencies.
The calculator is designed for the common case — a meal with friends — but works equally for taxis, delivery, salons or any service where you tip on a percentage basis. Pick a preset for speed (10/15/18/20/25), or fine-tune with the slider. Everything updates live as you type.
Etiquette note: most guides recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal because tax isn't a service. In practice many people tip on the post-tax total for the small simplicity gain. Both are fine — just be consistent.
How to calculate a tip (5 steps)
- Pick currency. USD, INR, EUR, GBP, CAD or AUD. Affects display formatting only.
- Enter the bill. The pre-tip total — usually the subtotal before tax for proper etiquette, or the post-tax total for convenience.
- Choose a tip percentage. Use the slider (10–30%) or one of the preset buttons (10, 15, 18, 20, 25%).
- Set the number of people. How many ways to split the total. Defaults to 2.
- Read the result. Right panel shows tip, total, and per-person amount. Tip per person is also broken out for clarity.

Frequently asked questions
+−How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal: tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100). Then total = bill + tip. To split, divide the total by the number of people. Example: $50 bill, 18% tip = $9 tip, $59 total, $29.50 per person for two.
+−What is a normal tip percentage in restaurants?
USA: 15–20% is standard, with 18% the most common default. Canada: 15–18%. UK and Australia: 10–12.5% if service isn't already added. India: 5–10% when there's no service charge. Japan, China and most of continental Europe: tipping is not expected.
+−Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal because tax isn't service. Many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity, which slightly increases the gratuity. Both are acceptable.
+−How do I split a bill unevenly?
This calculator does an even split. For uneven splits (someone had wine, someone didn't), calculate each person's portion of the pre-tip subtotal first, then add a proportional share of tip and tax. Most groups round generously to keep things simple.
+−Should I tip if there's a service charge?
If the menu or bill says 'service included' or 'service charge X%' you generally don't need to tip extra. In the UK and parts of Europe a discretionary 12.5% service charge is common — feel free to remove it if service was poor. In the US, 'service charge' on large parties is the tip.
+−How much should I tip for delivery, taxi or hairdresser?
Delivery: 10–15% with a $2–5 minimum in the US. Taxi/Uber: 10–15%. Hairdresser/barber: 15–20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night. These vary by country — adjust the tip slider in this calculator to match local norms.
+−Does the calculator save my data?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, logged, or stored.
