About this tool
WRRK's meme generator is a Canvas-based editor for the classic top-and-bottom-text meme format. Upload any image — a photo you took, a screenshot, a royalty-free image — and the tool overlays your captions in heavy condensed white type with a thick black stroke, which is the look that made memes a recognizable genre in the first place. Everything renders in your browser, so the template never leaves your device.
We deliberately don't ship the famous templates (Drake, Distracted Boyfriend, Two Buttons, etc.) because they're copyrighted photographs. Instead, the "Templates" tab shows abstract style placeholders that demonstrate the layout — and the primary flow is upload-your-own, which is also how professional brands and creators handle this. For legally clean source images, try Pexels, Unsplash, Pixabay, or Wikimedia Commons.
How to make a meme (5 steps)
- Upload your template. Drop in any image you want to use as the meme background — a photo you took, a screenshot, or a royalty-free image from Pexels, Unsplash, or Wikimedia Commons.
- Type top text. Add the setup line — usually the question, premise, or 'before' state. Use ALL CAPS for that classic meme look.
- Type bottom text. Add the punchline — the reveal, twist, or 'after' state. Keep it short. Memes hit harder when both lines are under 8 words each.
- Preview. The live preview shows the final meme with white text and a thick black stroke. Adjust font size if either line wraps awkwardly on long phrases.
- Download PNG. Click Download to save the meme as a PNG. Drop it into Slack, iMessage, Reddit, or Instagram — no watermark, no signup.

+−Is it legal to make memes from copyrighted images?
Memes generally fall under fair use in the US when they're transformative and non-commercial — adding text, satire, or commentary changes the meaning of the original image. But the underlying image is still copyrighted. For commercial use (ads, merchandise, sponsored posts), license the image or use Creative Commons / public-domain sources. The safest path is to upload a photo you took yourself or one with a CC0 license.

Imgflip and KnowYourMeme document the templates but don't license them. For legally clean templates, try Pexels, Unsplash, or Pixabay (all royalty-free), Wikimedia Commons (public domain and CC images), or your own photo library. The safest meme is the one you shoot yourself.

Impact has been the de-facto meme font since the early 2000s — bold, condensed, and high-contrast even at small sizes. White fill with a thick black stroke makes the text legible on any background image without needing a backdrop box. The tool uses Impact where available and falls back to other heavy condensed system fonts.

No. The meme generator runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your uploaded image never leaves your device, and we don't have any server-side storage of generated memes. Once you close the tab, the image is gone.
